Common Cold

Internal Medicine

Type 1: Wind-cold syndrome
Symptoms:
Cases with wind-cold tightening the exterior and obstruction of the lung-qi, manifesting as stuffy and running nose,slight itching throat, sneeze, cough, clear and watery phlegm , intense aversion to cold and mild fever, anhidrosis, general aching, headache, thin and whitish fur, floating and tense pulse.
Principle of treatment:
Expelling wind and cleaning away cold. Inducing diaphoresis and ventilating the lung. Select points mainly from Lung Meridian of Hand-Taiyin, the Large Intestine Meridian of Hand-Yangming and Urinary Bladder Meridian of Foot-Taiyang. Reducting method is applied and moxibustion added.
Prescription:
Lieque (LU7)Luo-Connecting Point the Eight Confluent Point (Lieque (LU7)Luo-Connecting Point the Eight Confluent Point), Yingxiang (LI20) (Yingxiang (LI20)), Zhizheng (SI7) Luo-Connecting Point (Zhizheng (SI7) Luo-Connecting Point), Fengmen (BL12) (Fengmen (BL12)), Fengchi (GB20) (Fengchi (GB20)), Hegu (LI4) Yuan-Source Point (Hegu (LI4) Yuan-Source Point)
Modification according to symptoms:
For headache, Yintang (EX-HN3), Taiyang(EX-HN5) are added; For backache, movable cupping is added the cup is moved down from the level of Dazhui (GV14) (DU14) to lumbar region and moved up and stopped at Feishu (BL13) (Feishu (BL13)) for 10-20 minutes and then withdrawn.
Type 2: Wind-heat syndrome
Symptoms:
Cases with attack of wind-heat on the lung and impairment of purifying and descending function of the lung, manifesting as stuffy and dry nose, little nasal discharge, swelling and sore throat, thirst, cough, yellowish and thick phlegm, mild aversion to cold and intense fever, sweat, headache, conjunctival congestion, thin and yellowish fur, floating and rapid pulse.
Principle of treatment:
Dispelling wind and removing heat. Keeping the lung-qi pure. Select points of Lung Meridian of Hand-Taiyin, Large Intestine Meridian of Hand-Yangming and Heart Meridian of Hand-Shaoyin.
Puncture with reducing method or prick for blood-letting with three-edged needle.
Prescription:
Chize (LU5)He-Sea Point (Chize (LU5)He-Sea Point), Yuji (LU10) Ying-Spring Point (Yuji (LU10) Ying-Spring Point), Quchi (LI11) He-Sea Point (Quchi (LI11) He-Sea Point), Neiting (ST44) Ying-Spring Point (Neiting (ST44) Ying-Spring Point), Dazhui (DU14), Waiguan (TE5) Luo-Connecting Point the Eight Confluent Point (SJ5)
Modification according to symptoms:
For swelling and sore throat Shaoshang (LU11)Jing-Well Point (Shaoshang (LU11)Jing-Well Point) is pricked for blood-lettting with three-edged needle. For infantile hyperpyretic convulsion, Shuigou (GV26) (DU26), Shixuan (EX-UE11) added.
The points are punctured superficially with filiform needle, and the needle should be withdrawn immediately. The points are not pressed, but a small drop of blood can be squeezed out.
Type 3: Summer-heat and Dampness Syndrome
Symptoms:
Cases with invasion by summer-heat and dampness in the exterior associated with disharmory of the lung and superficial defensive Qi, manifesting as heaviness in the head like bound tightly with a strip of cloth, arthrodynia of extremities,recessive fever, aversion to cold and little sweat, slight cough with whitish and stiky phlegm, chest distress, feeling of stuffiness in stomach, vomiting and nausea, abdominal distention, loose stool, scanty dark urine, tasteless and thirstlessness or thirst for hot drink, yellow thick and greasy fur,moderate or floating and rapid pulse.
Principle of treatment:
Clearing away summer-heat and eliminating dampness. Relieving the exterior and regulating the interior. Select points from Hand-Taiyin, Hand-yangming and Sanjiao Meridians. Puncture with reducing method.
Prescription:
Kongzui (LU6)Xi-Cleft Point (Kongzui (LU6)Xi-Cleft Point), Hegu (LI4), Zhongwan (CV12) Front-Mu Point of the Stomach (RN12), Zusanli (ST36) He-Sea Point (Zusanli (ST36) He-Sea Point), Zhigou (TE6) (SJ6).
Modification according to symptoms:
For severe fever Dazhui (DU14) is added. For severe dampness Yanglingquan (GB34) He-Sea Point, Influential Point of Tendon (Yanglingquan (GB34) He-Sea Point, Influential Point of Tendon) is added. For and abdominal distention and loose stool Tianshu (ST25) Front-Mu Point of the Large Intestine (Tianshu (ST25) Front-Mu Point of the Large Intestine) is added. Zusanli (ST36), Gaohuang (BL43) (Gaohuang (BL43)) are added for dificiency of both Qi and Yang. Feishu (BL13), Xuehai (SP10) (Xuehai (SP10)),and Fuliu(KI7) Jing-River Point (Fuliu(KI7) Jing-River Point) are added for dificiency of Yin and dificiency of blood.Puncture with reinforcing method.
