Regional Anatomy:
Skin subcutaneous tissue (including platysma)-between bilateral anterior bellies of digastric musckes-mylohyoid muscle-geniohyoid muscle-genioglossus muscle.
In the superficial layer, there are the cervical branches of the facial nerve and the branches of the superior branch of the trandverse nerve of the neck.In the deep layer, there are the branches or tributaries of the lingual artery and vein ane the branches of the hypoglossal and mylohyoid nerves.
Location:
Proper sitting with one's back propped; on the superior side of laryngeal protuberance, between the lower border of hyoid bone and thyroid notch.
Function:
Removing obstruction of the tongue, throat and ears, and promoting production of body fluid.
Indications:
Swelling and pain in the hypoglossal region, salivation with glossoplegia, aphasia with stiff tongue by apoplexy, sudden hoarseness, dysphagia.
Prescription:
Combined use with TianchuangSI16 (Tianchuang (SI16)) for treatment of glossitis; with ShuigouGV26 (Shuigou (GV26)) for treatment of hysterical aphasia; with QuchiLI11 (Quchi (LI11) He-Sea Point) for treatment of pseudo-bulbar palsy; and with HeguLI4 (Hegu (LI4) Yuan-Source Point), ZusanliST36 (Zusanli (ST36) He-Sea Point), SanyinjiaoSP6 (Sanyinjiao (SP6)), and TianchuangSI16 (SI16) for treatment of hyperthyroidism.
Methods:
Insert the needle obliquely to 1-1.5 cun depth toward the tongue root; needling response: local numbness and distention in tongue; moxibustion: mild moxibustion for 10 min.
Note:
On both side of the point, there exists the arteria laryngea superior which a branch of the arteria thyreoidea superior. Do not puncture deeply, or can penetrate the epiglottic cartilage-the vestibule of larynx by its tip and cause severe cough when puncturing 0.8-1 cun deep.
