Facial Paralysis

Type 1: Stagnation of the meridians and collaterals
Symptoms:
Sudden onset, frequent showing facial stiffness, numbness and paralysis after waking, without ability to move the facial muscles in the affected side, the mouth corner is oblique to the health side, water leaks when tooth brushing, food is remained in the mouth as it is taken, disappear of facial wrinkle and nasolabial sulcus, difficult to close eyes, lacrimation in wind time, even no tasting in the affected side or hyperacusis.
Principle of treatment:
Dredging the meridian. Selecting the acupoints in Hand and Foot yangming Meridians mainly, and some acupoints in Foot taiyang Meridian as supplementary. On face, using some oblique puncture or joint-puncture. Using reducing method in the early stage; using reinforcing method with moxibustion in the later stage.
Prescription:
Dicang (ST4) (Dicang (ST4)), Jiache (ST6) (Jiache (ST6)), Hegu (LI4) Yuan-Source Point (Hegu (LI4) Yuan-Source Point), Sibai (ST2) (Sibai (ST2)), Yangbai (GB14) (Yangbai (GB14))
Modification according to symptoms:
Cuanzhu (BL2) (Cuanzhu (BL2)) is added for uncapable rising; Yingxiang (LI20) (Yingxiang (LI20)) for disappearace of nasolabial sulcus; Yifeng (TE17) (SJ17) for mastoidalgia; Shuigou (GV26) (DU26) for oblique nasolabial groove; Chengjiang (CV24) (RN24) for oblique mentolabial groove; with Chengjiang (RN24), Lianquan (CV23) (RN23) for tongue numbness or no tasting.
Electrical acupunture:
Dicang (ST4), Jiache (ST6), Hegu (LI4), are selected for electrical stimulation for 5 to 10 minutes. The electrical tensity should make the patient feeling comfortable and the muscle on face trembling slightly. If gnathospasmus is occurred due to over deep puncture into jugomaxillary muscles, pull the needles out and puncture again.
Cautions and precautions:
During the treatment, the patient can be helped by moisture compress therapy, 10 minutes each time, and two times a day. Avoiding wind and cold, taking mouth and nose cover if neccessary.
