Xie Bai San is indicated cough with lung heat. It is applicable to clear heat, nourish yin, benefit qi and harmonize middle energizer. The author modifies the prescription to treat low fever.
1. Excess heat in Lung meridian.
It is indicated for all kinds of lung fire without considering cough, asthma and edema. The lung heat is usually caused by external pathogenic heat from mouth and nose, or external wind and cold turns into internal heat, then leads to impairment of purifying and descending function of the lung and causes the heat in skin. High fever is common to see and lasts for long time. Apply the herbs which clear lung heat such as Huang Qin, Sang Ye, Xing Ren, Gua Lou, Hai Fu Shi, etc.
2 Excess of Pathogens and Deficiency of Yin
In the chronic lung disease duration, or after fever, the patients have low fever in long term due to pathogens, no sweating or slight sweating, fever in skin, averse to cold, and gets server at 3:00-5:00pm. And dizziness, fatigue, dry mouth and less drinking are followed with. Because the pathogenic heat hurts yin, or yin deficiency, though the pathogen has gone, some of them still left, therefore, the low fever is caused. It can be treated by Xie Bai San. Apply Mai Dong, Bai He, Bai Wei, Jin Yin Hua, Mu Dan Pi, Bie Jia, Huang Qin, etc, according to the clinical syndromes.
3 Internal Retention of Damp and Heat
The patients who suffer from low fever are due to invasion of damp and heat, damp retention in middle energizer, deficiency of spleen yang and stagnation of both damp and heat. The main complains are low fever lasting for a long term, getting more serious in the afternoon; or heavy sensation of the head, abdominal distention and oppressed in chest. If the method of clearing heat and benefiting damp doesn't work, warming the spleen and eliminating damp should be taken to clear lung heat. The Xie Bai San can be used for "clearing lung heat, regulating middle energizer, and treating both the primary and secondary aspects". Apply Bai Zhu, Fu Ling, Ze Xie, etc, with combinability of Geng Mi and Gan Cao to strengthen spleen and eliminate damp; apply Huang Qin, Gua Lou, Sang Ye, etc, with combinability of Sang Bai Pi, Di Gu Pi to clear upper heat and eliminate damp heat.
