Gynecology and Obstetrics

The author has treated 8 cases of idiopathic hyperprolactinemia by acupuncture with satisfactory results. Before and after treatment, the prolactins (PRLs) in all the cases were elevated. Other endocrinous hormones were also measured. The main acupoints were Baihui (GV20), Qihai (CV6), Tianshu (ST25) Front-Mu Point of the Large Intestine, Zusanli (ST36) He-Sea Point and Dahe (KI12)Zigong (CV19) was added for infertility, Xuehai (SP10) for amenia, Danzhong (CV17) Front-Mu Point of the Pericardium for lactation, and Xingjian (LR2) Ying-Spring Point for facial furunculosis. Acupuncture was performed once every other day by uniform reinforcing-reducing techniques. The needles were retained for 20 minutes at each session. Twelve sessions constituted one course. There was no treatment during menstruation.

Results: Before treatment the PRL was 58.94ng/ml, while after treatment it was 23.18ng/ml. It was significantly reduced in the 8 cases after 2-5 courses of treatment. PRLs in 5 of them returned to normal range. PRLs in the two cases of amenia had not completely returned to normal level but the menstruations recovered. In the 4 cases of infertility, PRLs in three were reduced to normal range after treatment and two of them were pregnant. In the cases of lactation with furunculosis, PRLs returned to normal with the facial furunculosis disappearing and no recurrence during a one-year follow-up. The acupuncture treatment reduced not only PRLs but also LHs.
