Liver Meridian

Regional Anatomy:
Skin-subcutaneous tissue-medial side of tendon of anterior tibial muscle-between talus and medial malleolus of tibia.
There are the branches of the medial dorsal cutaneous nerve of the foot, the medial anterior malleoar artery and superficial dorsal vein, of the foot in this area.


Location:
Dorsiflex the foot; on the anterior and inferior side of medial malleolus, in the depression between tendons of anterior tibial muscle and musculus extensor hallucis longus.
Function:
Removing heat from the liver and gallbladder, and regulating the functions of lower jiao.


Indications:
Hernia, pain in the external genitalia, nocturnal emission, retention of urine, distending pain in the hypochondrium.


Prescription:
Combined use with XuanzhongGB39 (Xuanzhong (GB39) Influential Point of the Marrow) for treatment of inflammation of ankle joint; with ShenshuBL23 (Shenshu (BL23)) and ZusanliST36 (Zusanli (ST36) He-Sea Point) for treatment of nephritis; with XingjianLR2 (Xingjian (LR2) Ying-Spring Point) for treatment of dysuria; with SimanKI14 (Siman (KI14)) for treatment of ascites due to cirrhosis; and with HouxiSI3 (Houxi (SI3) Shu-Stream Point, The Eight Confluent Point), HeguLI4 (Hegu (LI4) Yuan-Source Point) and ZusanliST36 (ST36) for treatment of infectious hepatitis.


Methods:
Insert the needle perpendicularly to 0.5-0.8 cun depth; needling response: local distention and pain; moxibustion: using 3-5 moxa-cones, or mild moxibustion for 10 min.
