Internal Medicine

Metabolic syndrome refers to a syndrome which leads to atherosclerosis including central obesity, impaired glucose tolerance, type II diabetes, hyperinsulinemia or insulin resistance, dyslipidemia, hypertension, high acidosis, high-sugar state, fatty liver, osteoporosis, premature arteriosclerosis, coronary heart disease, and endothelial cell dysfunction etc. Dampness resistance is the basic pathogenesis of metabolic syndrome in TCM throughout the whole pathological process. Clinical treatment uses the principle of disseminating and venting damp, unblocking connecting channels and transforming stasis. It can play a role of preventing disease from exacerbating. And it will have a positive significance for the prevention and treatment of metabolic syndrome.
For early stage (asymptomatic phase), we apply Huo Pu Xia Ling Tang plus Ji Nei Jin, fried Shan Zha, fried Mai Ya, fried Shen Qu etc to disseminate and transform dampness, revive spleen and assist its transporting function; add Si Ni San plus Su Xin Hua, fried Mai Ya, Dan Shen etc to smooth liver and relieve stagnation, strengthen spleen and harmonize stomach.
For the middle stage, we use Wen Dan Tang plus Ze Xie, Dan Shen, Di Long, Shui Zhi, prepared Da Huang etc to transform phlegm and reduce stagnation. If there is a heat-fire, we’ll apply Long Dan Xie Gan Tang to clean heat and resolve dampness for excess case; Gou Teng Yin Zi to soft liver and extinguish wind for deficiency case. If there is phlegm block orifice, we’ll use Cang Pu Yu Jin Tang plus Tian Zhu Huang, Shui Zhi, Di Long etc to transform dampness and reduce stagnation, revive brain and open orifice.
