The author self built the prescription of Chai Hu Si Jin Decoction to treat gall-stone syndrome for 100 cases, the treatment effect is satisfying.

Most of the 100 cases are chronic gall-stone, a few of cases are cholecystitis. All the cases are diagnosed by “B ultrasonic examination” and “X-ray cholecystography”.

Types according to syndrome differentiation: damp heat of liver-gallbladder: the symptoms including indistinct pain and distention on right abdomen and right hypochondrium, sometimes it becomes severe, low fever, yellow urine, dry stools, yellow tongue coating, slippery pulse etc. Deficiency of spleen and obstruction of liver: the symptoms including lusterless yellowness face, poor appetite, distention pain on abdomen-hypochondrium, clear urine, watery stools, pale tongue, slow pulse etc. Method and treatment result: basal prescription: self built Chai Hu Si Jin Decoction including herbs of Chai Hu, Jin Qian Cao, Ji Nei Jin, Yu Jin, Hai Jin Sha, Huang Qi, Mu Dan Pi, Dan Shen, Ban Lan Gen, Jia Pian (baking them in a pan at a high temperature), Yin Chen, Da Huang, Wei Ling Xian, Zhi Ke, Yi Yi Ren, Dang Gui, Shan Zha.

Adding severalfold Dang Gui, Huang Qi if there is weakness and qi deficiency; Adding severalfold Yin Chen and adding Hu Zhang if the symptom of jaundice is severe; Adding Da Huang and Bin Lang if there is constipation; Adding Shan Zhi, Che Qian Zi if the patient with symptom of yellow urine; Adding Xuan Hu, San Leng if there is severe pain; Adding Shan Zha and Mai Ya if there is distention on abdomen-hypochondrium, etc.

Treatment result: All 100 gall-stone syndrome cases orally took herbs for 1-3 courses. They were follow-up reviewed after half year, X-ray and “B ultrasonic examination” showed 85 cases were healing (healing rate is 85%), 12 cases became better (12%), 3 cases were no effect occupying 3% (these cases combining with acute infection). Total effective rate is 97%.

Discussion: liver and gallbladder are ill together, we should soothe and drainage; dissolve and eliminate gall-stone, supplement each other; the differentiation can be correct, we may use the prescription flexibly; the nature of the herbs been used is mild, the patient’s diet should be light.
