There are totally 30 patients with 28 male and 2 female; oldest patient is 75 years old and youngest 16; shortest duration of disease is 1 day and longest 10 months. Patients are randomly divided into electronic ear points treatment ( 16 patients ) and body points treatment ( 14 patients ).
Electronic ear points treatment: points include diaphragm, ear-Shenmen (HT7) Shu-Stream, Yuan-Primary Point, subcortex, spleen, stomach. After needling insertion, we use pulse current with low frequency ( frequency is 200Hz per minute ), current intensity depends on tolerance of patient, stimulation lasts 30 to 60 minutes, treatment is once a day.
Electronic body points treatment: points have Zusanli (ST36) He-Sea Point, Zhongwan (CV12) Front-Mu Point of the Stomach, Tiantu (CV22), Danzhong (CV17) Front-Mu Point of the Pericardium, P6, Quchi (LI11) He-Sea Point, Hegu (LI4) Yuan-Source Point etc. After needling insertion, we use pulse current with low frequency ( frequency is 50Hz per minute ), current intensity depends on tolerance of patient, stimulation lasts 30 to 60 minutes, treatment is once a day.
Treatment results:
Electronic ear points treatment: all of patients ( 16 ) recover from diaphragm spasm, average treatment time is 1.56.
Electronic body points treatment: 8 patients recover from diaphragm spasm, average treatment time is 6.25; 4 patients recover from hiccups but still feel fullness on the chest, average treatment time is 12; 2 patients feel improvement of hiccups because hiccups times are reduced, average treatment time is 8.
So treatment effect given by electronic ear points group is better than that given by electronic body points group.
Diaphragm spasm with long time can result in excited point in cerebral cortex. There are full of nerves specially vagus nerve on auricle. Electronic treatment on ear points can forcefully stimulate cerebral cortex so that only cerebral cortex becomes excited, then vagus nerve can be inhibited and diaphragm spasm can be stopped.
