Lung Meridian

Regional Anatomy:
Skin-subcutaneous tissue-deltoid muscle-clavipectoral fascia-coracoclavicular ligament.
In the superficial layer, there are the cephalic vein and the intermediate supraclavicular nerve. In the deep layer, there are the branches of the thoracoacromialartery and vein, the branches of the medial and lateral pectoral nerves.


Location:
Upright sitting position with arms akimb; in the center of triangular depression on the lower border of the lateral end of the clavicle.
Function:
Clearing away the lung-heat and regulating the flow of qi, purging away the limbs-heat.


Indications:
Cough, asthma, pain in the chest, fullness in the chest, irritable feverish sensation in the chest, persistent limbs-heat due to exogenous febrile disease, unable to raise the arm due to pain in the shoulder, and the pain induced in supraclavicular fossa, pain in the back due to hypochondriac pain; sudden pain in the chest or abdomen, severe abdominal pain accompanying with severe palpitation, goiter, cold limbs, intermittent pulse etc.


Prescription:
Combined with FeishuBL13 (Feishu (BL13)) and ChizeLU5 (Chize (LU5)He-Sea Point) for treatment of bronchitis; with TaiyuanLU9 (Taiyuan (LU9)Shu-Stream Point, Yuan-Source Point) and DingchuanEXB1 (EX-B1) for treatment of bronchial asthma; with BingfengSI12 (Bingfeng (SI12)) for treatment of scapulohumeral periarthritis; with ZhongfuLU1(Zhongfu (LU1)), ZhourongSP20 (Zhourong (SP20)), XiongxiangSP19 (Xiongxiang (SP19)) and TianxiSP18 (Tianxi (SP18)) for treatment of long thoracic nerve pain.


Methods:
Direction: Puncture horizontally; depth: 0.3-0.5 cun; needling response: local sensation of distension, irradiating toward the upper arm; moxibustion: 3-5 moxa-cones, mild moxibustion for 15 min.
Note:
Don't puncture deeply toward the medial aspect, or else the needle would penetrate the serratus anterior muscle-the external intercostal muscles-the internal intercostal muscles-the parietal pleura-the pleural cavity-the visceral pleura and the lung by its tip of needle and cause pneumatothorax.
