2.The Changes of Tongue of Defensive, Qi, Nutrient (ying), Blood Syndrome
Thin tongue coating with white color indicates the invasion of lung by external pathogenic factors, but the nature is classified into cold and heat. No changes on the tongue proper, thin and white coating without dryness indicate invasions of external wind and cold. Red color on the tongue tip, white and thin coating without moisture indicate invasion of defensive system by external wind and heat. Deep red tongue proper, dry coating, dry or white or yellow on the middle part of tongue coating indicate defensive qi system syndrome. Deep red tongue proper indicates nutrient system and blood system syndromes. Deep red tongue proper with yellow or white coating indicates invasion of nutrient system by external pathogenic factors and factors on the qi system is not relieved. Deep red tongue proper with scanty coating indicates invasion of nutrient system and blood system by heat. Deep red tongue proper with seem sticky coating indicates invasion of nutrient system by pathogenic factors and turbid qi in middle energizer. Deep red tongue proper and difficulty of tongue protrusion indicates extreme heat, stirring up of wind, retention of phlegm in the root of the tongue. Deep red tongue proper with luster indicates stomach yin deficiency. Deep red tongue with dry coating indicates excessive heat in nutrient system that consumes yin. Deep red tongue with dry and weak indicates kidney yin deficiency. Only deep red and dry on the middle part of the tongue indicates invasion of heart nutrient by stomach heat. Deep red on the tongue tip indicates flare up of heart fire. Besides, purplish and deep red together indicates heat in nutrient blood, purplish and darkish red indicates blood stagnation and heat. In addition, another purple tongue which is deeper than the purple-red tongue, means heat transfers into nutrient and blood. When the person is known as an obsolescence bruise in the chest and diaphragm, the cementation of heat and stasis, tongue’s color must be purple and dark, lay hands on feeling wet. Ancient Dr. Ye Tianshi also told that the relation of dry, moisture of tongue coating with febrile diseases exists and the changes of dry, moisture of tongue coating relates with not only natures of pathogenic qi, but also body constitution and diseases.
