Wen Bing

Yin Qiao San is the representative prescription with pungent in flavor and cool in property for relieving exterior syndrome and treating febrile diseases. The function of clearing heat is better than Sang Ju Yin and not stronger than Bai Hu Tang, therefore, medical scientist Jutong Wu named it as Xin Liang Ping Ji also. There are 4 modifications of Yin Qiao San. Four modified prescriptions are given in the “Delailed Analysis of Seasonal Febrile Diseases”, and the indications are not only treating the syndromes of wei-system of lung, but also referring to the syndromes of qi-system, qi-system ans and ying-system of febrile diseases.

(1) In the modification prescription which Niu Bang Zi, Yuan Shen and Jie Hui are subtracted and Xing Ren, Shi Gao and Huang Qin are added in Yin Qiao San, conduct compatibility of Jin Yin Hua, Lian Qiao, Zhu Ye, Shi Gao and Huang Qin to clear away pathogenic heat in qi-system. The whole prescription is both pungent in flavor and cool in property for relieving exterior syndrome and clearing away heat and fire, and mainly treats febrile diseases, wei-system and qi-system disease. The manifestations are fever without aversion to cold or fever with mild aversion to cold, thirst with large quantity of drinking, perspiration, red tongue, yellowish and dry tongue coating, rapid or rolling and rapid pulse.

(2) In the modification prescription which Niu Bang Zi and Xuan Shen are subtracted and Xing Ren and Hua Shi are added, conduct compatibility of Jin Yin Hua, Lian Qiao, Zhu Ye, Xing Ren, Hua Shi, Yi Yi Ren and Tong Cao to clear away summer-heat and eliminate dampness. The whole prescription is both pungent in flavor and cool in property for relieving exterior syndrome and clearing away summer-heat and eliminating dampness. It mainly treats the febrile diseases with pathogenic qi and dampness on superficial, or wei-system diseases of internal retention of summer-heat and damp, and exterior tightened by exogenous pathogens. The manifestations are fever with mild aversion to wind and cold, headache, sore and ache of whole body, adiaphoresis or hypohidrosis, restlessness, thirst, short and yellowish urine, poor appetite, abdominal distention, red tongue, sticky tongue coating, superficial and rapid or soft and rapid pulse.

(3) In the modification prescription which Dou Chi is subtracted, and grinded raw Di Huang, Dan Pi, Da Qing Ye and double doses Yuan Shen are added, conduct compatibility of Jin Yin Hua, Lian Qiao, Zhu Ye, Sheng Di, Dan Pi, Da Qing Ye and Yuan Shen to clear away stagnated heat in lung meridian, cool ying-system and detoxicate. The whole prescription is clearing away lung heat, cooling ying-system and making appearance of measles rash. The main indications are treating stagnated heat of qi-system in lung, rash due to lung heat related with ying-system. The manifestations are general fever, rash in the skin, cough, oppressed in chest, red tongue, thin and yellowish tongue coating, and rapid pulse.

(4) In the modification prescription which Sheng Di, Dan Pi, Chi Shao and Mai Dong are added, conduct compatibility of Jin Yin Hua, Lian Qiao, Zhu Ye, Sheng Di, Dan Pi, Chi Shao and Mai Dong to clear away heat in heart, cool ying-system and nourish yin. The whole prescription is cooling ying-system, clearing away heat and pungent in flavor and cool in property for relieving exterior syndrome. The main indications are treating febrile diseases in wei-system with Ying-yin hurt, or summer-heat in both wei-system and ying-system. The manifestations are fever, mild aversion to cold, headache, hypohidrosis, restlessness, red tongue with scanty tongue coating, superficial, thready and rapid pulse.
