4 INDICATIONS
1. Sore throat caused by exogenous pathogenic wind. Scrophularia (Xuan Shen) is used with Arctium (Niu Bang Zi) ,platycodon root (Jie Geng) and Mentha (Bo He).2.Sore throat caused by excessive interior heat. Scrophularia (Xuan-shen) is used with Ophiopogon root (Maidong) root (jie-geng) and raw Licorice root (Gan Cao).3.Boils carbuncles and furuncles. Scrophularia (Xuanshen) is used with Honeysuckle flower (Jin Yin Hua) and raw Licorice root (Gancao).4.Scrofula, goiter and subcutaneous modules. Scrophularia (Xuan-shen) is used with Tendrilled fritillary bulb (Chuan Bei Mu) and Oyster shell (Mu Li).5.Febrile disease in which pathogenic factors attack the nutritive and blood levels:a) fever, insomnia and deep red tongue proper with scanty coating-Scrophularia (Xuanshen) is used with Fresh rhe-mannia root (Sheng Di Huang) and Ophiopogon root (Maidong);b)high fever, unconsciousness add maculopapule-Scrophularia (Xuanshen) is used with Anemarrhena rhizome (Zhi Mu), Gypsum (Shi Gao) and Rhi-noceros horn (Xijiao).6.Constipation due to dryness is the intestines. Scrophularia (Xuan-shen) is used with Fresh rehmannia root (Shengdihuang) and Ophio-pogon root (Maidong).

Scrophularia (Xuanshen) is contrain-dicated in cases with weakness lf the spleen and stomach and should not be combined with Black false bellebore (Lilu).
