Renal insufficiency period (azotemia period): main syndromes: fatigue, short breathing, poor appetite, abdominal distention, soreness and weakness on lumbar region and knee joints, dizziness, tinnitus, irritability, blurring vision, restless, insomnia, clear and profuse night urination, loose or dry stools, pale tongue with thin and white tongue coating, thready pulse. The treatment in this period: warm and tonify spleen and kidney, promote diuresis, and eliminate damp. Prescriptions: modification of Bu Pi Jian Shen Tang (self-made): Tai Zi Shen, Fu Ling, Bai Zhu, Shan Yao, Jing Jie, Jiang Can, Gou Qi Zi, Shan Zhu Yu, Dan Shen and Bai Mao Gen.
2. Renal failure period: main syndromes: listlessness, fatigue, aversion to cold, cold sensation on four limbs, feverish sensation on five centers, dizziness, soreness and weakness on lumbar region and knee joints, poor appetite, loose stool, abundant night urination, pale tongue with teeth marks, deep and weak pulse. Treatment: warm up primary yang, tonify and benefit vital yin. Prescription: modification of Chong Cao Tang (self-made): Dong Chong Xia Cao, Shu Di Huang, Shan Yao, Shan Zhu Yu, Tu Si, Gou Qi Zi, Shu Fu Zi, Rou Gui, Che Qian Zi, Tai Zi Shen and Ba Ji Tian.
3. uraemia period: main syndromes: listlessness, severe fatigue, greyish complexion, vertigo, nausea, abdominal distention, poor appetite, urinary taste in the mouth, red and flabby tongue with teeth marks, yellow, thick and sticky coating, wiry and rapid or wiry and rolling pulse. Treatment: harmonize stomach, eliminate damp, promote fu organs and eliminate turbid qi. Prescription: modifications of Qing Du Bao Sheng Tang (self-made): Qing Ban Xia, Fu Ling, Chen Pi, Zhi Shi, Zhu Ru, Shu Da Huang (decocted late), Fu Peng Zi, Lian Zi Xu, Qian Shi and Dong Chong Xia Cao.
