3. Knowing the property of Fu Zi very well, having the rule for flexible application
Zhonglin Fan prefers flexible use of Fu Zi although the dosage is large. He is brave and daring but never foolish reckless. He is also courageous and knowledgeable with careful and reasonable at the using of Fu Zi. There are details in the following:
(1) Interval intake of Fu Zi;
(2) Increasing dosage 30g in the beginning, then increasing dosage;
(3) Redress herbs after obtaining good effect given by large amount of Fu Zi, combining with Ren Shen, Gou Qi, Dong Chong Xia Cao to balance yin and yang;
(4) Be familiar with the response after intake – for persons with yang deficiency and yin excess, after beginning use of medicine with pungent and heat, often occur irritability, darkish bleeding from nose, dry throat, dry and red eyes, cough with excessive sputum, edema all over the body, abdominal pain and Diarrhea, or lassitude etc. These symptoms are caused by yang medicine movement, the yin come out and yang ascending, the evil eliminating and normal qi growing. It is a sign of the disease get out from yin to yang. The good response after intake should be whole body warming sensation, slightly red tongue and face. Combining with small dosage of medicine to nourish yin at this moment, to hold back the restored yang, then the yin and yang will be natural coordination, the evil will go away and good health will come back.
4. Correctly understanding toxicity of Gan Jiang and Fu Zi
We should correctly understand toxicity of Fu Zi so that we can exert the maximum effectiveness of Fu Zi in clinical practice.
