Internal Medicine

Sheehan's syndrome is ischemia and putrescence of pituitary gland caused by postpartum hemorrhage and shock, and a series of symptoms appear when the function of pituitary gland is damaged. In Chinese medicine, it is consumptive syndromes and deficiency of both qi and blood after delivery. Main manifestations: no milk, amenorrhea, sexual hypofunction, fatigue, coldness of limbs, aversion to cold, dry skin without gloss, poor appetite, loss of hair, breast reduction, hypotension, low-pressure of ECG, pale tongue with thin coating, retard, thready and weak pulse. In the stress state of injury, surgery, infection and hunger, pituitary gland crisis is induced. In western medicine, Sheehan syndrome is treated by hormone replacement therapy and different hormone is selected according to the dysfunction degree of target organ of anterior pituitary. In Chinese medicine, the formula of Sheehan syndrome is Gui Pi Tang. When the pituitary gland crisis occurs, implosive therapy is applied with a large amount of hormones in western medicine; Du Shen Tang is applied in Chinese medicine, and it is decocted repeatedly to benefit qi and consolidate collapse; Fu Zi, Gan Jiang and Gan Cao are added for recuperating depleted yang and arising from the dead.
