The Emperor asked: “What about coughs of the six fu-organs? How do they receive evils?”

Qi Bo answered: “the prolonged coughs of the five zang-organs may be transmitted to the six fu-organs. If spleen cough is not cured, it may affect the stomach. The symptoms of stomach cough are coughing, vomiting, and even retch roundworms in bad vomiting. If liver cough is not cured, it may be transmitted to the gallbladder. Gallbladder cough is marked by coughing and vomiting bile. If lung cough is not cured, it may be passed to the large intestine. Large intestine cough is signified by a cough with incontinence of feces. If heart cough is not cured, it may contaminate the small-intestine. Small intestine cough is characterized by coughing and passing gas. If kidney cough is not cured, it may be transferred to the bladder. The symptoms of bladder cough are a cough with incontinence of urine. If these coughs cannot be stopped for a long time, the triple warmer will receive disease. Triple warmer cough is manifested by coughing, abdominal fullness, and no desire for food and drink. All these coughs are due to water converging in the stomach, and are relevant to the lungs. They can make the patient have much phlegm, and cause facial edema and qi reversal.”
