Joy makes the qi and emotions harmonious, and makes the nutritive qi and defensive qi moving free, so the qi is slack. Sorrow makes the heart system uneasy. The lobes of the lungs are lifted. The upper-warmer becomes obstructed. The nutritive qi and defensive qi cannot be dispersed. The qi turns hot inside the chest. So, sorrow makes the qi to be depleted. Fear makes the kidney essence sink. The sinking obstructs the upper-warmer. The obstruction causes the qi to fall. The falling renders the lower-warmer distended. Therefore the qi descends. Cold makes the muscular straie closed and the nutritive qi and defensive qi stopped, so the qi is astringent. Heat makes the muscular straie open, the nutritive qi and defensive qi unimpeded, and the sweat discharged copiously, so the qi is discharged very much. Fright makes the mind, spirit and thought have nothing to attach to, so the qi is chaotic. Labor brings grasping and sweating, the qi from the outside and inside escapes, so the qi is exhausted. Thought obliges the mind and spirit to concentrate on something excessively. The normal qi stops and stands still, so the qi is knoted.
