Nei Jing

The north produces cold. The cold promotes the water qi. The water qi generates salty flavor. The salty flavor nourishes the kidneys. The kidneys govern the marrow. The kidneys promote the liver, and dominate the ears. The cold in the heaven, water in the earth, bones in the body, kidneys in the zang organs, black in colors, yu in musical scales, moan in sounds, shudder in diseases, ears in the orifices, saltiness in flavors, and fear in emotions are all corresponding.

Fear damages the kidneys, but thought can overcome fear. Cold harms the blood, but dryness can overcome cold. Saltiness impairs the blood, but sweetness can overcome saltiness.
