Internal Medicine

Otopuncture was seldom used in clinical study of acupuncture for treatment of coronary heart disease. This report carried out an investigation using otopuncture at single otopoint for treatment of coronary heart disease. They used either heart or stomach otopoint, and compared the effects. 38 cases with coronary heart disease were the patients admitted in the Cardiovascular Medical Department and ward. The patients were randomly divided into two groups: heart otopoint group (treatment group) 20 cases, and stomach otopoint group (control group) 18 cases. A short filiform needle was used to puncture at heart or stomach otopoint. The needle was twirled for 1-2 minutes until the local distension or hot sensation appeared. Then the needle was connected with electric needle instrument using continuous wave at frequency of 5 Hz and the strength which the patient can tolerate. The needle was retained for 30 minutes, once everyday, 6 times constituting one therapeutic course. There was one day break between 2 courses. After 4 courses, the therapeutic effectiveness was evaluated.

Result: Effects for angina pectoris: In the treatment group, there were 6 cases with significant effect, 5 cases with improvement, and 1 case with no effect; while in the control group, there were respectively 9, 2, 6 cases, and 1 case with aggravation. The effects in the treatment group is markedly better than that in the control group (P<0.05). The effects on electrocardiogram: In the treatment group, there were 3 cases with significant effect, 9 cases with improvement and 8 cases with no effect; and in the control group, there were 2 cases with improvement, 15 cases with no effect and 1 case with aggravation. The effects were better in the treatment group than in the control group (P<0.05). In addition, before and after the treatment, blood cholesterol and triglyceride were examined. The results showed that puncture heart otopoint can markedly lower the blood lipid, especially the cholesterol, while puncture stomach otopoint has no such action.
