"Relieving fever with sweet-warm herbs" can be only used for qi deficiency and fever syndrome, because the spleen is in charge of sending qi up, sending up helps transportation, the essence qi can be sent up and dispersed by lung if the function of transportation is normal, the essence qi can be dispersed and the water channel may be communicated. If sinking of spleen yang makes essence qi that can not be dispersed, the functional activity of  generation and transportation of essence blood will decline, then the yin fluid will be insufficient, deficiency fever will be produced from inner.

Concerning qi deficiency and fever, we should neither use herbs with function of relieving exterior syndrome and dispersing to dissipate qi and harm fluid nor use herbs with function of clearing heat and relieving toxicity to cool spleen-stomach, specially do not use the method of nourishing yin to lower the fire to tonify spleen and stomach. The spleen and stomach qi recover, the essence qi becomes sufficient, then the fever will be relieved automatically. Therefore, replenishing middle jiao and benefiting qi to regulate spleen and stomach is the basic theory for treatment of qi deficiency and fever.

Sweet-warm prescription is not only for replenishing middle jiao, but also has the function of warming-moving kidney yang, sending up yang qi. "Relieving fever with sweet-warm herbs" method helps to send up yang qi, activate the sending up function of kidney in order to strengthen and promote middle jiao, it focuses on recovering yin essence and relieving deficiency fever. Although Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang is not the prescription for replenishing kidney, it can send up kidney yang, promote qi transformation, generating yin essence to relieve deficiency fever.

Qi deficiency and fever symptoms: fatigue and weakness, heavy voice and difficult breath, body fever and irritability, thirsty and preference to drink warming water, sallow face, poor appetite, abdominal distention, pale tongue coating, thready, weak and rapid pulse, etc.

Clinic application of "Relieving fever with sweet-warm herbs" method: "Relieving fever with sweet-warm herbs" method can be used for all kinds of weakness and fever which the "root" is yang and the "branch" is yin, due to deficiency of primordial yang, yang deficiency affecting yin, yin fluid injured, yin deficiency causing fever, such as fatigue and weary, high fever, fever due to evil decline and anti-pathogenic qi deficiency during infantile malnutrition, fever after rubeola, hectic fever, etc. The differentiation is based on thirsty and can not ingest without warming water, fever and irritability, the fever comes from zang fu and medulla, the skin is not obviously euthermic, it is generally seen short small amount yellow urine, red tongue with thin coating, thready, rapid and weak pulse, fever interior but cold exterior, or, aversion to cold in daytime but dryness-heat at night.

The meaning of prescription of "Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang": every herb is selected for "reinforcing qi", the prescription’s main characteristics is combination of elevating herbs with qi reinforcement herbs, what is called "elevating" is sending up the declined qi of middle jiao, it is kind of "reinforcement" method. Sheng Ma, Chai Hu can have the function of elevating yang if they are combined with herbs that can reinforce middle jiao and benefit qi. The function of elevating yang is related with exterior dispersing, namely, adjusting nutrient-defensive qi to expel evil and promote anti-pathogenic qi, so as to help the herbs that have the function of reinforcing middle jiao and benefiting qi to become more effective.
