1 TASTE
Bitter, pungent and warm

Spleen, stomach, lung and large intestine


3 FUNCTIONS
1. To promote qi circulation; 2. To dry dampness; 3. To descend rebellious qi and relieve asthma; 4. To resolve retention of food.


4 INDICATIONS
1. Disharmony of spleen and stomach due to stagnation of dampness and retention of food manifested as epigastric distension and fullness. Magnolia bark (Hou Po [3]) is used with Atractylodes rhizome (Cang Zhu [4]) and Tangerine peel (Chen Pi [5]) in the formula Pingwei San. If dampness blocks the spleen and stomach causing retentions of food, abdominal distension and pain and constipation, Magnolia bark (Houpo) is used with Rhubarb (Da Huang [6]) and Immature bitter orange (Zhishi (BL52) [7]) in the formula Da Chengqi (ST1) [8] Tang.2. Cough and asthma. Magnolia bark (Houpo) is used with Apricot seed (Xing Ren [9]) in the formula Gui Zhi [10] Jia Houpo Xingzi Tang.
