Da Huang [3] is bitter with the cold nature, it enters the spleen, stomach, large intestine, liver, pericardial meridian, the primary functions are purgation of accumulation, clearing heat and resolving toxicity, cooling blood and stopping bleeding, normalizing gallbladder to cure jaundice, activating blood circulation to dissipate blood stasis. This herb is big bitter and big cold, its nature is sinking and not floating, its function is moving and not hold, the ancients called it “General”. The mechanism of Da Huang on treatment of dysuria and urine retention:

(1) Attacking accumulation, clearing heat to dredging and promoting urination.
(2) Clearing and benefiting damp-heat to dredging and promoting urination.
(3) Activating blood circulation to dissipate blood stasis to dredging and promoting urination.
