Chinese Medicine Classic / Nei Jin [2]

The south produces heat. The heat generates the fire qi. The fire qi generates bitter flavor. The bitter flavor nourishes the heart. The heart governs the blood. The heart promotes the spleen, and dominates the tongue. The heat in the heaven, fire in the earth (fire flouring up from earth, cause heat in the heaven), vessels in the body, heart in the zang organs, red in colors, zheng in musical scales, laugh in sounds, melancholy in diseases, tongue in the orifices, bitterness in flavors, and joy in mood are all corresponding.

Joy damages the heart, but fear can overcome joy, heat harms the qi, but cold can overcome heat. Bitterness impairs the qi, but saltiness can overcome bitterness.
