The south produces heat. The heat generates the fire qi. The fire qi generates bitter flavor. The bitter flavor nourishes the heart. The heart governs the blood. Joy damages the heart, but fear can overcome joy, heat harms the qi, but cold can overcome heat. Bitterness impairs the qi, but saltiness can overcome bitterness.
