4 INDICATIONS
1. Internal blood stagnation manifested as irregular menstruation, amenorrhea, abdominal pain or postpartum abdominal pain. Red sage root (Dan Shen [3]) is used with Motherwort (Yi Mu Cao [4]), Peach seed (Tao Ren [5]), Safflower (Hong Hua [6]) and Chinese angelica root (Dang Gui [7]).2. Qi and blood stagnation manifested as cardiac pain, abdominal pain or epigastric pain. Red sage root (Tan Xiang [8]) in the formula Danshen Yin.3. Blood stagnation manifested as general pain or joint pain. Red sage root (Danshen) is used with Chinese angelica root (Danggui), Chuan Xiong [9] rhizome (Chuanxiong) and safflower (Honghua).4. Carbuncles, furuncles and swellings. Red sage root (Danshen) is used with Honeysuckle flower (Jin Yin Hua [10]), Forsythia fruit (Lian Qiao [11]) and Frankincense (Ru Xiang [12]) in the formula Xiaoru Tang.5. Febrile disease with pathogenic wind invading the nutritive level manifested as high fever, irritability, dull maculopapule and a red or deep red tongue proper with scanty coating. Red sage root (Danshen) is used with Fresh rehmannia root (Sheng Di Huang [13]), Scrophularia (Xuan Shen [14]) and Bamboo leaf (Zhu Ye [15]).6. Deficiency of nutritive blood with internal heat manifested as palpitations, irritability and insommia. Red sage root (Danshen) is used with Wild jujube seed (Suan Zao Ren [16]) and Multiflower knotweed (Yejiaoteng).

Blood invigoration is enhanced by frying with wine. Do not combine with the herbs Black false bellebore (Lilu).
