Regional Anatomy:
Skin-subcutaneous tissue-long extensor muscle of toes-interossous membrane of leg.
In the superficial layer, there is the lateral sural cutaneous nerve. In the deep layer, there are the branches of the deep peroneal nerve. If the needle penetrates through the interosseous membeane of the leg, the peroneal artery and vein may be injured.


Location:
Upright sitting or lateral position; 3 cun above the tip of lateral malleolus, on the posterior border of fibula.
Function:
Replenishing vital essence, relaxing rigidity of muscles and activating the collaterals, clearing heat and loosing the bowels, and regulating the flow of qi and relieving pain.


Indications:
Apoplexy, hemiplegia, pain in the neck, abdominal distention, pain in the hypochondriac region, muscular atrophy of the lower limbs, spastic pain of the leg, and beriberi.


Prescription:
Combined use with FutuLI18 (Futu (LI18) [3]) for treatment of scapulohumeral periarthritis; with ZusanliST36 (Zusanli (ST36) He-Sea Point [4]) for treatment of beriberi; with SanyinjiaoSP6 (Sanyinjiao (SP6) [5]) for treatment of hypertension; and with NeitingST44 (Neiting (ST44) Ying-Spring Point [6]) for treatment of distention of the chest and abdomen.


Methods:
Insert the needle perpendicularly to 1-1.5 cun depth; needling response: local numbness and distention, radiating downward; moxibustion: using 3-5 moxa-cones, or mild moxibustion for 15 min.
