Regional Anatomy:
Skin-subcutaneous tissue-posterior border of iliotibial tract-anterior side of lateral head of gastrocnemius muscle.
In the superficial layer, there is the lateral cutaneous nerve of the thigh. In the deep layer, there are the lateral superior genicular artery and vein.
Location:
Flex the knee; postreior to the external epicondyle of femur, in the depression between iliotibial tract and tendon of biceps femoris. Or, on the middle line of the lateral side of the thigh, 3 cun vertically above YanglingquanGB34(Yanglingquan (GB34) He-Sea Point, Influential Point of Tendon [3]).
Function:
Relaxing rigidity of muscles and tendons, easing joint movement, and expelling wind and removing dampness.
Indications:
Swelling and pain of the knee, contracture of the tendons in popliteal fossa, and numbness of the leg.
Prescription:
Combined use with YanglingquanGB34 (GB34) for treatment of gonitis; and with ZusanliST36 (Zusanli (ST36) He-Sea Point [4]) for treatment of paraparesis.
Methods:
Insert the needle perpendicularly to 1-1.5 cun depth; needling response: local numbness and distention, radiating downward; moxibustion: using 3-5 moxa-cones, or mild moxibustion for 10 min.
