Irritable Bowel Syndrome Treated by Integrated Treatment [1]

1. Chinese herbal medicine treatment: the pathogenesis of irritable bowel syndrome is disorder of liver and spleen. Therefore, the author raises the principles of treatment for nourishing the liver and blood, regulating liver qi, strengthening spleen, eliminating dampness, harmonizing stomach and regulating the spleen and stomach. The basic prescription is as following: Dang Gui [3], Chuan Xiong [4], prepared Di Huang, Bai Shao [5], Zhi Shi [6], Fo Shou [7], Xiang Fu [8], Chai Hu [9], Ge Gen [10], Bai Zhu [11], Fu Ling [12], Shen Qu [13], Huang Lian [14], Dang Shen [15] and Bin Lang. Da Huang [16] is added for constipation; Shan Yao [17] and Sha Ren [18] are added for Diarrhea [19]; Bai Shao is added for abdominal pain; Qing Pi [20] is added for abdominal distension.

2. Tuina treatment: Zu San Li (Zusanli (ST36) He-Sea Point [21]): pressing and kneading on ST36 with both thumbs; 10 times clockwise rotation and 10 times anticlockwise rotation, and relieving slowly. Repeating like this for 10 times. Applying the treatment for 1-2 times a day to strengthen spleen qi. Tuina on abdomen: applying tuina according to sequence of colons, few times a day, to regulate qi in abdomen.

3. Exercise treatment: walking: walking for 40 minutes 1 hour after meal, 1-3 times a day to regulate qi activity. Ba Duan Jin: keeping balance of yin and yang and regulating physiological function.

4. Diet regulation: keeping proper diet with moderate five flavors, temperature and quantity in proper time. The medicated food for nourishing liver, strengthening spleen and dispersing liver qi could be applied also.
