Treatment of acute tonsillitis given by acupuncture (220 cases) [1]

There are 270 cases of acute tonsillitis in our clinic. 220 patients are treated by acupuncture, 50 by antibiotics, here we give case observation report.


1 Treatment method
  Acupuncture group: Jiache (ST6) [3], Hegu (LI4) Yuan-Source Point [4], Quchi (LI11) He-Sea Point [5]; heavy stimulation without retaining of needles, one or two times a day.
  Antibiotics group: muscular injection of penicillin and etc.


2 Observation of treatment effect
  A: Recovery time of body temperature:
     Acupuncture group: 1 to 5 days, average is 1.95 days.
     Antibiotics group: 1 to 6 days, average is 3.66 days.
     P < 0.01 according to statistics analysis.
  B: Recovery time from sore throat:
    Acupuncture group: 1 to 7 days, average is 3.22 days.
    Antibiotics group: 3 to 10 days, average is 4.84 days.
P < 0.01 according to statistics analysis.
  C: Disappeared time of tonsil pseudomembrane:
    Acupuncture group: 1 to 5 days, average is 2.8 days (100 cases).
Antibiotics group: 1 to 7 days, average is 4.88 days (50 cases).


3 Experience
  On treatment of acute tonsillitis given by acupuncture, needling LI11 can clear heat, dispel wind and eliminate exterior pathogenic factors; needling LI4 can benefit throat. Acupuncture group can get quicker result than drug group to stop fever and sore throat.
