Regional Anatomy:
Skin-subcutaneous tissue-superior auricualr muscle-temporal fascia-temporal muscle.
In the superficial layer, there are the auriculotemporal nerve and the parietal branches of the superficial temporal artery and vein. In the deep layer, there are the branches of the anterior and posterior deep temporal nerves.
Location:
Sit upright or lie prostrate on one's side; 1 cun anterosuperior to the ear within the hairline, about 1 cun anterior to JiaosunTE20 (Jiaosun (TE20)).
Function:
Clearing heat and expelling wind, relieving pain and activating the collaterals.
Indications:
Headache, swelling of the cheek, trismus, pain in the temporal region, and infantile convulsion.
Prescription:
Combined use with XiaguanST7 (Xiaguan (ST7)) for treatment of inflammation of mandibular joint and toothache; and with LiequeLU7 (Lieque (LU7)Luo-Connecting Point the Eight Confluent Point) for treatment of migraine.
Methods:
Insert the needle subcutaneously to 0.5-1 cun depth; needling response: local numbness and distention; moxibustion: using 3-5 moxa-cones, or mild moxibustion for 3 min.
