Regional Anatomy:
Skin-subcutaneous tissue-capsule parotid gland-parotid gland.
In the superficial layer, there are the auriculotemporal nerve and the great auricular nerve. In the deep layer, there are the superficial temporal arttery and vein and the plexus of the facial nerve.
Location:
Sit upright with one's back propped, or lie prostrate on one's side; anterior to the incisura intertragica ( intertragal notch ), on the posterior border of mandibular condyloid process, in the depression which becomes visible when the mouth opens.
Function:
Inducing resuscitation and improving hearing, dredging the collaterals and tranquilizing the mind.
Indications:
Deafness, tinnitus, toothache, pain due to the dislocation of mandibular joint, mumps, and deviation of the eye and mouth.
Prescription:
Combined use with ZhongzhuTE3 (Zhongzhu (TE3) Shu-Stream Point) for treatment of deafness and tinnitus; and with SibaiST2 (Sibai (ST2)) for treatment of facial spasm.
Methods:
Insert the needle perpendicularly to 0.5-1 cun depth; needling response: local numbness and distention; moxibustion: using 1-3 moxa-cones, or mild moxibustion for 10min.
