Nei Jing

The Emperor asked: "Does all edema result from the kidneys?"

Qi Bo answered: "The kidneys are a yin zang-organ. The earthly qi ascends like the steaming action of the kidneys.  Then the water is produced, so the kidneys are called the extreme yin. Gallantry and hard work may induce perspiration governed by the kidneys. When perspiration encounters the wind, the water cannot be stored in the zang-fu organs inside, and cannot escape out of the skin. The water dwells at the pores of the skin and runs along the skin. So the skin becomes edematous. The disease is rooted in the kidneys and is called wind edema disease. The skin's pores are also called the sweat pores."
