Nei Jing

The Emperor asked: "I was told that men have essence, qi, liquid (Jing), fluid (Ye), blood and vessels. I think they are all the same substance, but have six different names, I don’t know why."

Qi Bo answered: "Two spirits (man and woman) have sexual inter course, a body form is then made. What has been generated before the body is generated is called essence."

"What is qi?" Qi Bo answered: "The upper-warmer emanates and spreads the essential qi of the five cereals. What nourishes the skin, fills the body and moistens the body hair like irrigation of mist and dew, is called qi."

"What is liquid (jing)?" Qi Bo replied: "Sweat discharged from the muscular striae is called liquid."

"What is fluid (ye)?" Qi Bo answered: "After grains get in, the qi becomes full. What spills into the bones to aid flexibility and stretching, what exudes to nourish the brain and marrow, and what moistens and lubricates the skin, are called fluid."

"What is blood?" Qi Bo answered: "After the middle-warmer is endowed with qi, filtered and purified water becomes red. It is called blood."

"What are vessels?" Qi Bo answered: "What restrain the nutritive blood to make it run in them is called vessels."
