Differentiation and Treatment of Menopause Syndrome

1. Deficiency of kidney yin: the main manifestations are flushed face, feverishe sensation on five centers, antedated menstruation with large amount of bleeding, or uterine bleeding with bright red or deep red, dry month, constipation, yellow and scanty urine, or dizziness, tinnitus, sore and weak on lumbar region and knee joints, sore and pain of joints, or abnormal sensation of skin, such as numbness, urticant and foreign body sensation; red tougue, scanty tongue coating, thready and rapid pulse. Prescription: modification of Zuo Gui Wan. Shu Di Huang, Gou Qi Zi, Shan Zhu Yu, Lu Jiao Jiao, He Shou Wu, Huai Shan Yao, Fu Ling, Chuan Niu Xi and Zhi Gan Cao.

2. Yin deficiency and liver excess: abnormal emotional change, upset，mental stress, irritability, headache, dizziness, dry eyes, blurring vision, distention and pain of hypochondria red tongue with scanty coating, wiry, thready and rapid pulse. Treatment: nourish kidney and yin, calm the liver and suppress yang. Prescription: modification of Qing Xuan Ping Gan Tang. Dang Gui, Sheng Di Huang, Bai Shao, Han Lian Cao, Chuan Xiong, Sang Ye, Ju Hua, Huang Qin, Hong Hua and Niu Xi.

3. Stagnation of liver qi: depression, upset, irritability, fullness on chest, sighs, distention and pain of hypochondriac and breasts, irregular menstruation, hypomenorrhea or hypermenorrhea, dark menstrual blood with clots, or menostasis, accompanied with fatigue, dark red tongue body or with petechia, thin tongue coating, thready pulse. Treatment: relieve?Qi Stagnation in liver, nourish water fluid and wood. Prescription: modification of Xiao Yao San. Cu Chai Hu, Cu Xiang Fu, Yu Jin, Dang Gui, Bai Shao, Sheng Di Huang, Mu Dan Pi, Huang Qin, Bo He and Chuan Lian Zi.

4. Disharmony between heart and kidney: palpitation, irritability, poor memory, insomnia with dream disturbed, easily frightened; feverish sensation on face, sweating, red tip of tongue, thin tongue coating, thready or thready and rapid pulse. Treatment: nourish yin, dispel fire, harmony heart and kidney. Prescription: modification of Huang Lian E Jiao Tang. Huang Lian, E Jiao, Bai Shao, Sheng Di Huang, Shu Di Huang, Xuan Shen and Lian Zi Xin.

5. Deficiency of spleen and kidney yang: pale face, lumbar soreness  and back pain, loose stool, poor appetite, fatigue; leucorrhea with large amount with white and clear color, or irregular menstruation, hypermenorrhea with antedated menstruation, or metrorrhagia and metrostaxis, or atrophy and prolapse of genitals; flabby and pale tongue, deep and thready pulse. Treatment: tonify fire to produce earth, warm kidney and support yang. Prescription: modification of You Gui Wan. Shu Di Huang, Shan Zhu Yu, Gou Qi Zi, Zhi Fu Zi, Gui Zhi, Shan Yao, Zhi Gan Cao, Dang Shen, Bai Zhu, Yin Yang Huo, Ba Ji Tian, Du Zhong, Lu Jiao Jiao, Bu Gu Zhi and Sha Ren.
