TCM Liver System

Zang Fu System

Liver channel connects with gall bladder and relates externally-internally.  The liver opens into eyes. The main physiological functions are storing blood, maintaining the flow of vital energy, and controlling the tendons.



The liver possesses the function of storing blood and regulating the volume of circulating blood. Part of the blood remains in the liver during rest, while blood is released from the liver to increase the volume of blood in circulation to the required amount during vigorous activity. Also the liver influences menstruation.



Liver is responsible for harmonious and unobstructed functional activities.
a. Depression or anger may weaken the liver so that it is unable to promote the unrestrained and free flow of qi. Conversely, dysfunction of the liver often accompanies with emotional changes such as depression and irascibility.
b. Liver promotes the functioning of the other zang-fu organs, channels and collaterals, especially spleen and stomach in digestion and absorption.
c. Liver also affects bile secretion.



The yin and blood of liver nourish tendons, keeping them in a normal state of contraction and relaxation.
