Headache

Internal Medicine

Type 1: Headache due to pathogenic wind-dampness:
Symptoms:
Headache seizures when exposed to the evil wind and cold, often unilateral in left or right side alternately, or in the whole head. Manifestations are expression of distending pain, stabbing pain or pulsating pain; swelling occasionally occurs to the scalp of sore spot; nasal obstruction, running nose, white tongue fur. Wiry and tight pulse, Severe symptoms accompanied with nausea, vomiting, dizziness, sweating, pale complexion, etc.
Principle of treatment:
Expelling wind-evil and clearing away cold-evil, eliminating evil dampness to dredge the collaterals. Select the points from the Sanjiao Meridian of Hand-Shaoyang, the Gall Bladder Meridian of Foot-Shaoyang, the Large Intestine Meridian of Hand-Yangming, the Stomach Meridian of Foot-Yangming. Puncture with reducing method.
Prescription:
Fengchi (GB20)(Fengchi (GB20)), Touwei (ST8) ( Touwei (ST8)),Tongtian (BL7) (Tongtian (BL7)), Hegu (LI4) Yuan-Source Point (Hegu (LI4) Yuan-Source Point), and Sanyangluo (TE8) (SJ8).
Modification according to symptoms:
For frontal headache, Shangxing (GV23)(DU23), Yangbai (GB14)(Yangbai (GB14)) are added. For parietal headache, Baihui (GV20)(DU20), Qianding (GV21)(DU21) are added. For occipital headache, Tianzhu (BL10)(Tianzhu (BL10)), Houding (GV19)(DU19) are added. For headache on one side Shuaigu (GB8) (Shuaigu (GB8)), Taiyang (Ex-HN5) are added.
Type 2: Headache due to upsurge of Liver-yang
Symptoms:
Stabbing pain of the head, often located unilaterally, dizziness, scorching sensation of the face, irritability, hot temper, conjunctival congestion, bitter taste in the mouth, red tongue, wiry pulse; often occuring due to mental tension.
Principle of treatment:
Calming the liver and lower the fire-evil. Stopping the wind and suppressing yang. Select the points from the Gall Bladder Meridian of Foot-Shaoyang, the Liver Meridian of Foot-Jueyin, the Kidney Meridian of Foot-Shaoyin. Puncture with reducing method.
Selection of points:
Xuanlu (GB5) (Xuanlu (GB5)), Hanyan (GB4) (Hanyan (GB4)), Taichong (LR3) Shu-Stream, Yuan-Source Point (Taichong (LR3) Shu-Stream, Yuan-Source Point), and Taixi(KI3) Shu-Stream, Yuan-Source Point (Taixi(KI3) Shu-Stream, Yuan-Source Point).
Modification according to symptoms:
Blood letting in Guanchong (TE1) Jing-Well Point (SJ1) for conjunctival congestion. For scorching sensation of the face, Neiting (ST44) Ying-Spring Point (Neiting (ST44) Ying-Spring Point) is added.
Type 3: Headache due to stagnation of phlegm
Symptoms:
The head achvs as if it were wrapped up tightly with an oppressive sensation in the chest,; nausea, vomiting phlegm and saliva, loose stool, white and greasy fur, slippery pulse.
Principle of treatment:
Resolving sputum and lower the turbid substance, dredging the collaterals to stop pain. Select the pointsfromthe Ren Meridian, the Stomach Meridian of Foot-Yangming. Puncture with reducing method.
Prescription:
Zhongwan (CV12) Front-Mu Point of the Stomach (RN12), Fenglong (ST40) Luo-Connecting Point (Fenglong (ST40) Luo-Connecting Point), Baihui (DU20), and Yintang (EX-HN3).
Modification according to symptoms:
For vomiting, Neiguan (PC6) Luo-Connecting Point the Eight Confluent Point (Neiguan (PC6) Luo-Connecting Point the Eight Confluent Point) is added. For loose stool, Tianshu (ST25) Front-Mu Point of the Large Intestine (Tianshu (ST25) Front-Mu Point of the Large Intestine) is added.
Type 4: Headache due to deficiency of blood
Symptoms:
Lingering headache with dizziness reduced after rest, lassitude, palpitation, pale complexion, long history of illness and bleeding, pale tongue, tiny pulse.
Principle of treatment:
Benefiting the vital energy and nourishing blood, regulating collaterals and stopping pain. Select the points from the Du Meridian, the Stomach Meridian of Foot-Yangming, the Spleen Meridian of Foot-Taiying. Puncture with reinforcing method.
Prescription:
Shangxing (DU23), Xuehai (SP10) (Xuehai (SP10)), Zusanli (ST36) He-Sea Point (Zusanli (ST36) He-Sea Point), and Sanyinjiao (SP6) (Sanyinjiao (SP6)).
Modification according to symptoms:
Apply moxibustion at Ganshu (BL18) (Ganshu (BL18)), Pishu (BL20) (Pishu (BL20)), Shenshu (BL23) (Shenshu (BL23)), Qihai (CV6) (RN6), etc. according to the conditions required, after headache is relieved.
Type 5: Headache due to blood stasis
Symptoms:
Pricking headache, difficult to cure and located in a certain place, poor eyesight, hypomnesis, slightly purple tongue, tiny or uneven pulse.
Principle of treatment:
Promoting blood circulation to removing blood stasis, promoting vital energy to stop pain. Select Ashi points, the points from the Large Intestine Meridian of Hand-Yangming, the Spleen Meridian of Foot-Taiyin. Puncture with reinforcing and reducing methods.
Prescription:
Ashi points, Hegu (LI4), and Sanyinjiao (SP6).
Modification according to symptoms:
For headache in supra-orbital bone, Cuanzhu (BL2) (Cuanzhu (BL2)) is added. For temporal headache, Taiyang (Ex-HN5) is added. For parietal headache, Sishencong (Ex-HN1) is added.
Cautions and precautions:
Acupuncture and moxibustion reveal good effect, but organic diseases of the brain should be ruled out, so that the primary disease can be treated in time.
