Qi and Blood

Essence qi Blood Jing Ye

Qi and blood are the fundamental substances which exist in all the tissues and organs and circulate in the channels and collaterals all the time. In TCM Qi also connotes the physical functions of organs, and it can be further classified into different kinds.



As the basic material for the functional activities of various tissues and organs, blood is derived from the food essence and kidney; and it circulates in vessels, channels and collaterals of all parts of the human body to provide nutrition.

The relationship between qi and blood can be explained in such a way:
qi originates from blood, and in turn governs the circulation of the blood.
